Apple’s Vision Air mixed reality headset project, expected to be more affordable and lightweight, has faced a significant setback due to a decision from key component supplier Samsung.
Vision Air May Be Cancelled
Samsung announced that it has halted production of the low-cost glass-based micro-OLED G-VR panel required for the Vision Air. This decision officially phases out the G-VR technology, which would have enabled the development of a more affordable model compared to the Vision Pro.
This situation poses a serious problem for the long-awaited Vision Air project, and rumors are circulating in tech circles that Apple has completely suspended the project. Samsung’s decision to halt production is believed to be related to Apple’s suspension of the project.
Apple’s shift in strategy stems from the Vision Pro’s high $3,499 price tag and the resulting limited market impact. Furthermore, competitive pressure from the rival Galaxy XR, coupled with its $1,800 price tag, has led Apple to reassess the feasibility of its plan to produce a lower-cost XR device.
Samsung’s cancellation of the G-VR project eliminates the possibility of a more affordable Vision Air in the short term, while Apple appears to be looking to open a new chapter for the overall XR ecosystem. According to recent reports, Apple is shifting its focus away from the VR/AR headset segment and focusing its attention on AI-powered smart glasses.
As part of the company’s new strategy, its first screen-free smart glasses model is expected to launch in 2026, with a more advanced version expected in 2027. This restructuring represents a significant shift in both Apple’s hardware strategy and long-term product planning.
